Benjamin Netanyahu appointed a new ambassador to the US: Yechiel Leiter, an American who immigrated to Israel 40 years ago and who strongly supports both the war in Gaza and the Israeli settlements in the West Bank.

The new ambassador was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He was an adviser to Netanyahu and Ariel Sharon. He lives in an Israeli settlement in the West Bank and lost his son, an Israeli soldier, in the fighting in Gaza last year.

Leiter gained attention after delivering a tough message to President Biden at his son’s funeral: “Take it from a simple person in Scranton – we’re going to win this, with or without you. We will win without problems, because we are a people of survival”.

Netanyahu praised the qualities of the new ambassador: “He is a very talented diplomat, an eloquent orator, who has a deep understanding of American culture and politics.”

The appointment comes at a time when Trump won the presidential election. In his first term, Trump supported Israeli settlements in the West Bank. Now, settler leaders hope that Trump will support the formal annexation of the West Bank.

Leiter will replace current ambassador Michael Herzog starting January 20, exactly when Trump takes office, according to The Guardian.
