Netanyahu promises US not to attack Iranian oil facilities – Asia

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged not to attack Iranian oil or nuclear facilities with the Biden administration, the Washington Post reported this Monday, citing two US officials with knowledge of the matter.

Netanyahu said that Israel will only attack Iranian military targets, following Iran’s attacks on Israeli cities in early October, suggesting a more limited response to prevent the escalation of the war in the region, the American newspaper reports.

The commitment was made in a telephone conversation – the first in seven weeks – last Wednesday between the Israeli Prime Minister and US President, Joe Biden. The retaliation will be calibrated to avoid the perception of “political interference in the US elections”, one of the sources told the Washington Post, at a time when the US presidential elections are approaching.

An attack on Iranian oil installations could send energy prices soaring, so Netanyahu’s promise was seen with relief in Washington, the newspaper reports. The Israeli prime minister’s more “moderate” position could be taken into account in Biden’s decision to send a missile defense system to Israel, according to both sources.

It is worth remembering that Biden’s statements in which he said that the US would be “discussing” a response to the attacks on Israel that could involve attacking Iranian oil installations caused crude oil prices to soar. Shortly thereafter, Biden advised Israelis to look for “other options.”
