Netflix Abandons World’s Largest VR Headset. Not the Place for That Kind of Entertainment?

Netflix is cleaning up its portfolio and discontinuing support for the world’s most popular VR headsets. At least when it comes to its dedicated app.

Netflix has a rather cool approach to all kinds of headsets, which it made quite clear to everyone with the launch of the Apple Vision Pro. It was then that the company made it clear that it was only interested in being on platforms where a lot is happening. And although the group of fans of all kinds of augmented and virtual reality goggles is not very loud – it is rather difficult to hide that they are not a particularly large group, looking at the rest.

Netflix is fully aware of this and is refraining from further development of the application for MetaQuest goggles.

Meta Quest Without Netflix App, But Users Won’t Be Left Out in the Cold

Meta Quest goggles are the most popular and best value for money goggles on the market. It’s no wonder they have a large group of fans and that Netflix developed a dedicated app for them a few years ago. But the company is taking a step back and after a few years, it decided to stop developing its app. An app that has never kept up with those known from smartphones. Low resolution (it supported max 480p) or the lack of an option to download to the device’s memory are just some of its “sins”. And considering these “buts”, I think that many users won’t even miss it that much.

All the more so because if someone actually watches Netflix in VR goggles, they got support for the platform in the browser a few weeks ago. Anyone interested can start VOD by typing netflix.com, logging in and starting the content they are interested in. Importantly: it will be of better quality (1080p) than it was in the dedicated application. Unfortunately, they can still only dream of downloading to the device’s memory.
