Netflix in the crosshairs of criticism after the live match between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul

A historic event for Netflixbut a disaster for many viewers. During the match between Jake Paul e Mike Tysonthe first live sporting event broadcast by the platform, Italian fans, awake at dawn to watch the match, were greeted by buffering, blocked images and delays. The disappointment exploded on social media, with hashtags like #NetflixCrash trending, and many users have threatened to cancel their subscription, in Italy as in other parts of the world.

The boxing match between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson was one of the most anticipated sporting events of the year, and Netflix, for the first time, ventured into live broadcast of an event of this magnitude. However, instead of a triumphant debut, the service faced harsh criticism. During the entire match, many users reportedor continuous buffering, transmission delays and compromised image quality.

Among critics, well-known names such as Dave Portnoy, founder of Barstool Sports, and commentator Skip Bayless have shared their discontent on X. Portnoy wrote: “#Netflix wasn’t ready for this. It’s unwatchable.”while Bayless feared the worst even before the main match, declaring: “Streaming issues during the live event are a concern. I hope the match isn’t a technical disaster.”

Some Italian viewers also expressed their dissent, complaining of waking up at 4am only to face constant blockages and delays.

This isn’t Netflix’s first problem with live events. In April 2023, the long-awaited reunion show of Love Is Blind it was delayed for 90 minutes due to technical issues, forcing the platform to release a recorded version the next day.

Netflix has stated that it intends to invest further in live events, with the NFL and WWE already scheduled for 2025. However, after this disaster, the platform will have to review its infrastructure to avoid a repeat of what happened with the Jake Paul match and Mike Tyson.

In Italy, discontent was palpable on social media. Many fans complained that they lost hours of sleep due to the frustrating experience and threatened to cancel their subscriptions: “We pay for a premium service, but end up with poor quality”commented a user on X.

In fact, Netflix wanted to push the accelerator to enter the live sporting events market, but this first test highlighted technical flaws that cannot be ignored. For a platform with such massive resources, errors like this are unacceptable. Before launching into larger events, such as NFL or WWE events, Netflix will have to guarantee a quality of service that meets user expectations.

And you, were you among those who were anxiously awaiting the meeting? Let us know in the comments if you too have thought about saying goodbye to Netflix.
