Netflix Will No Longer Support iPhones and iPads Running iOS 16

In recent years, Netflix has been gradually dropping support for older devices, and now it’s the turn of some iPhone and iPad models. The streaming platform has just confirmed that it will soon no longer provide new versions of the app for devices running iOS 16. This change may prompt many users to consider updating their devices if they want to continue using Netflix without any issues.

Netflix Says Goodbye to iOS 16

With the latest update to the Netflix app for iOS, users have received a notification that iOS 16 support has been discontinued. Affected devices include models such as iPhone X and the first generation of iPad Prowhich cannot be updated to iOS 17and therefore will no longer be compatible with future versions of the app.

The message displayed on the screens of devices with iOS 16 reads:

We’ve updated the Netflix app! To use the latest version, install iOS 17 or later.

For now, iOS 16 users can ignore the warning and continue using the Netflix app, but not for long. New versions of the app not only introduce new features, but also contain important bug fixes and security updates. Over time, the app may stop working properly on older devices.

Affected devices

Here are the devices that won’t be able to update to iOS 17 and will therefore be excluded from Netflix support in the future:

  • iPhone 8
  • iPhone 8 Plus
  • iPhone X
  • iPad 5 (2017)
  • iPad Pro first generation

If you are a Netflix user and own one of these devices, it may be time to consider purchasing a new smartphone or tablet to avoid compatibility issues with the app.

For users who want to continue enjoying Netflix without having to change devices, there are some temporary options. You can still use the app in its current version on iOS 16 for a while, but over time you may encounter security issues and a lack of new features. Alternatively, you could take advantage of other platforms, such as browsers or smart TVs, if your primary device is no longer supported.
