Netherlands wants to implement its own refugee plan

The Dutch coalition government, led by Geert Wilders’ far-right Freedom Party (PVV), wants to make changes to immigration policy.

Dutch Minister of Asylum and Migration Marjolein Faber, from the PVV, has told the European Commission that the Netherlands wants to withdraw from the refugee admission regulations.

Faber made a statement regarding the letter he wrote to the European Commission, saying, “I informed the European Commission that I want an immigration exemption for the Netherlands in Europe. We must once again be responsible for our own asylum policy.”

Netherlands’ new immigration plan

The Dutch government, which came to power in July, announced its immigration policy for next year, which includes the deportation of immigrants who are not accepted as refugees.

European Commission spokesman Eric Mamer said of the government’s plans: “We have accepted this legislation. You cannot withdraw from legislation that has been accepted in the EU.”

The government plans to declare an “asylum crisis” to pave the way for measures such as restricting visas for family members of those granted asylum and facilitating the deportation of migrants who do not qualify as refugees. The plan must first be reviewed by an advisory board.

The coalition government in the Netherlands, led by Dick Schoof and formed in July, includes the Party for Freedom (PVV), the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), the New Social Contract Party (NSC) and the Citizens’ Farmers’ Movement Party (BBB).
