The American company Neuralink Elon Musk, which develops brain-computer interfaces, announced the start of testing a technology that will allow paralyzed people to control a robotic arm with the power of thought.
According to the Bloomberg portal, the appearance of a device ready for testing on humans is expected no earlier than in a few years. The goal is to allow paralyzed patients to control a robotic arm through a special brain implant.
“We are pleased to announce that we have received approval to begin research into expanding the brain-computer interface and using our N1 implant as a control aid for a robotic arm. This is an important first step not only towards restoring digital freedom, but also physical freedom,” the company said on its X social media page, adding that this line of research is codenamed Convoy.
The current model of the Neuralink implant allows patients to control a computer cursor, tablet or similar digital tools and even play video games. To date, only two patients have received such implants, but Musk’s company aims to implant such devices in the brains of millions of people within 10 years.
Neuralink is also currently developing the Blindsight implant, which will give vision to even those born blind.
