Never before has Volvo sold as many cars as it will in 2024

Volvo reports that it sold 763,389 new cars worldwide last year. That was eight percent more than in 2023. In fact, there were never so many before. Of those more than 760,000 new passenger cars, 175,194 were fully electric (+54 percent). This means that almost a quarter (23.1 percent) of all Volvos sold last year were electric. Furthermore, Volvo sold 177,593 plug-ins (+16 percent) and 410,602 units with a mild or non-mild hybrid combustion engine. It is that category that increased EV and plug-in sales are taking a bite out of. Volvo will sell 7 percent fewer cars with a (mild hybrid) combustion engine in 2024. The almost eight-year-old Volvo XC60 was – as in previous years – the most popular new Volvo worldwide. Volvo sold 230,853 copies. One in three (30.2 percent) of all cars sold by Volvo in 2024 was an XC60. The Volvo XC40/EX40 follows in second place with 173,890 units sold worldwide. Interesting: in 2023, Volvo sold significantly more XC40s/EX40s (200,670 units). Undoubtedly the EX30 took a bite out of the sales of those two. Despite its relatively old age, the Volvo XC90 sold 108,621 units. That was slightly more than in 2023 (107,549). Volvo in the Netherlands Not only did Volvo break its own sales record worldwide in 2024, it also did so in the Netherlands. Last year, 30,995 Volvos were registered in our country. That was no less than 89.3 percent more than in 2023. After Kia, Volvo was the most popular brand in our country in 2024. The EX30 in particular was a real success in the Netherlands. With 10,802 registrations it was the third most popular new car in the Netherlands and after the Model Y it was the most popular EV. Of the almost 11,000 new cars that Volvo registered in our country in 2024, 62 percent were fully electric. The Volvo EX40/XC40 together accounted for 7,674 registrations. Do Dutch Volvists have anything to look forward to? Certainly. This year the brand is expanding its delivery range with the EX30 Cross Country, a more rugged variant of the EX30. Volvo is also launching a completely new model: the ES90. The Volvo ES90 will be an electric sedan that can be seen as the successor to the S90.
