Microsoft introduces artificial intelligence tools to Paint and Notepad, allowing users to perform AI-assisted text and creative editing on Windows 11.
Today, Microsoft has begun rolling out updates to Paint and Notepad applications for Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev channels in Windows 11, incorporating new experiences powered by artificial intelligence.
These innovations allow users to experiment with advanced image and text generation and editing functions, expanding the creative possibilities of these traditional applications.
New Creative Level in Paint: Generative Fill and Erase
Paint version 11.2410.28.0 has added two features that transform the way you edit images: Generative Fill (Generative Fill) y Generative Erase (Generative Erase), both designed to facilitate the creative process through artificial intelligence.
The tool Generative Fill allows users to make additions and modifications to images using text descriptions, while preserving the artistic style of the project.
With this option, users can select an area on the canvas, describe what they want to add, and the AI will generate visual options that can be accepted or modified as needed.
On the other hand, the function Generative Erase offers the ability to remove unwanted objects from images, filling empty space so that it appears as if the object was never there.
This tool, available on all Windows 11 devices, allows users to mark the area to be deleted, apply the generative erase option, and quickly get a clean canvas.
According to the Microsoft development team, these tools are designed to make the creation process in Paint more accessible and efficient, both for professionals and casual users.
To use Generative Fillrequires a Microsoft account sign-in, and is, for now, available exclusively on Copilot+ devices powered by Snapdragon processors.
Co-Creator and Image Maker: Enhanced Image Creation Experiences
Along with the new features in Paint, Microsoft has also improved Cocreadorthe imaging engine, using an optimized diffusion model that promises more accurate and faster results.
This improvement allows users to rely on a moderate and safe creative experience, an advantage that adds to the accuracy of the model. Like Generative Fill, Cocreator is available to users of Copilot+ devices with Snapdragon.
Additionally, Microsoft expanded the availability of the Image Creatora feature released in Paint last year in preview, to more regions, including the United States, Canada, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Germany.
Image Creator allows Windows 11 users to generate images from text and is accessible to those with Microsoft 365 or Copilot Pro subscriptions in countries such as Australia, New Zealand, and Thailand.
Notepad gets a makeover with AI: Rewriting Tool and Performance Improvements
In parallel, the Notepad update (version 11.2410.15.0) gives users the ability to rewrite text using generative AI.
With this feature, users can select a sentence or paragraph, click the rewrite option, and choose from three generated variations. This tool allows you to adjust the tone, length and structure of the texts, making it easier to adapt the content to different needs.
The rewrite feature is available in Windows 11 in the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Canada, Italy, and Germany, and like the new Paint options, it requires a Microsoft account to access.
In other markets such as Australia and Singapore, Microsoft 365 and Copilot Pro users will be able to use AI credits to enjoy this feature.
Additionally, improvements have been implemented to the performance of the Notepad application, reducing its boot time by an average of 35%, with some users experiencing improvements of over 55%.
Availability and future perspective
These AI features in Paint and Notepad are being rolled out gradually and may not be available to all users in the Windows Insiders Canary and Dev channels immediately. Microsoft plans to closely watch user feedback to make adjustments before expanding these tools to a broader audience.
