New app reveals deepfakes and scam calls

Trend Micro Check is a new AI-powered app to help consumers spot potential scams and rising AI threats like deepfakes.

“Criminals annually cheat consumers around the world for $1 trillion, so it’s a huge problem that we want to help combat using the app,” says Danish Andreas Christensen, regional director in the Nordics at the cyber security company Trend Micro, which has developed the app.

Trend Micro Check allows consumers to submit content such as messages, ads or social media content to quickly determine whether or not they can trust it.

The app can also help confirm whether a live video call is a deepfake.

Online fraud has worsened in the past year

A new global survey from Trend Micro among 4,080 consumers shows that 73 per cent of respondents believe that the amount of online fraud and the associated risk has worsened in the past year. At the same time, 79 per cent expressed concern that a family member could become a victim of online fraud. Furthermore, 96 per cent said of consumers that they would do something active if it could protect themselves, their families and others from fraudsters.

Although 71 per cent of those surveyed were somewhat or very confident that they could identify online fraud, 62 percent said they would still use an app that could help them quickly confirm whether an email, social media post, an ad, an SMS or a phone number is a scam.

“Consumers around the world lost more than $1 trillion to fraud last year, so more must be done to protect them. As our first Foundation Partner, Trend Micro is clearly committed to combating this problem by providing tools like the AI-powered features of Trend Micro Check and by supporting and participating in the important work we do. We appreciate Trend Micro’s dedication to this cause and their technical leadership in the use of AI against the abuse of AI,” said Jorij Abraham, CEO of the Global Anti-Scam Alliance.

App detects attempts to swap faces during video calls

Online fraudsters have been successful in part because AI tools allow them to create deceptive content that elicits an emotional response from consumers.

With a tool like Trend Micro Check, consumers can proactively block fraud before they see it, receive real-time fraud alerts before they do harm, and most importantly: easily and instantly verify if something is a fraud before consumers are defrauded.

The app offers, among other things:

– Scam Check: AI-powered tool that assesses in real time the likelihood that content (eg an ad, message or web page) is a scam. The tool provides an easy-to-understand summary of potential security risks as well as recommended actions.

– Deepfake Scan: Identifies potential attempts to replace faces using deepfake during live video calls.

– SMS Filter: Blocks spam and scam messages before they reach the inbox.

– Call Block: Blocks incoming calls from telemarketers, robocalls and scammers.

– Web Guard: Blocks risky websites and filters suspicious ads.

Trend Micro Check is now available on iOS and Android in select countries. Learn more about Trend Micro Check, including system requirements and availability, at:
