‘New mobile chip will surpass Apple’s M4’

Chip manufacturer Qualcomm wants to make another big leap forward with the second generation of its Snapdragon 8 Elite chips. The new mobile chip would even surpass Apple’s M4 chip, which is in Macs and iPad Pros.

The current generation of Snapdragon 8 Elite chips have only been available for a few months in new Android phones from Oppo, Xiaomi and Asus, among others. The new Samsung Galaxy S25 phones, which will be unveiled later this month, will probably also have the Snapdragon 8 Elite on board. But Qualcomm is already working on the successor and it promises to be a powerhouse. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 2 would be more powerful than Apple’s M4 chip. You will find the M4 in the new iMac, the MacBook Pro and the Mac Mini, but also in the iPad Pro 13 that was released last year.

Apple’s CPU is extremely powerful in both multi- and single-core performance, but the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 2 seems to be better in the latter area. According to the well-known tech leaker Digital Chat Station both the new Qualcomm chip and MediaTek’s new Dimensity 9500 will outperform Apple’s M4 chip. The new chips from Qualcomm and MediaTek are said to achieve a score of 4000 points in the Geekbench 6 single-core test.

Faster but also more expensive

It is not yet known when exactly the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 2 will be released. It was recently leaked that Qualcomm had started testing the new mobile chipset much earlier than expected. It could be a challenge for smartphone manufacturers, because according to rumors, the new chip is not only 20 percent faster, but also considerably more expensive. As a result, phone brands would have to settle for less profit.

Apple M5

One caveat: by the time the two chips are released later this year, Apple’s new M5 processor won’t be long in coming either. The first devices with M5 chips are expected around November. You can count on them not sitting idle in Cupertino and coming up with a big performance boost again.

In any case, Apple feels the hot breath of Qualcomm and Mediatek on its neck, because the current chips already perform better than the A18 chips in the iPhone 16s.
