France took another step forward in the development of solar capacity during 2024. By installing approximately 3.32 gigawatts (GW) of new solar systems in the first nine months, the country further improved its renewable energy capacity. According to data from the French power grid operator Enedis, about 1,351 megawatts (MW) of new solar installations were added in the third quarter of this year alone. Growth was most pronounced in the commercial rooftop sector, where small businesses increased installations from 318 MW at the end of the first quarter to 547 MW by the end of the third quarter.
As they report, so far over a million renewable energy installations have been connected to the electricity grid, most of which are solar systems. The reason given is the interest in self-consumption, especially among individuals. Interest in self-consumption has more than tripled in the last two years, exceeding 610,000 prosumers.
France is a country that produces about 70 percent of the country’s electricity from nuclear power. In addition to nuclear capacity and the development of solar capacity, especially among individuals, France produces on average slightly more than 10 percent of its energy from hydropower plants, and also about 10 percent from wind power plants, depending on the time of year.
In parallel with this, Enedis data from September also records the development in the electromobility sector, indicating that more than 800,000 chargers are currently installed in the parking lots of French companies, which represents more than a third of the chargers in the country, which is twice as much compared to 2022. a year. Such data of the solar sector and charging infrastructure indicate the development of green technologies in the business sector.
Everything together points to the constant development of France in the field of sustainable development. Enedis already reached a record last year when 4.2 GW of new capacity of renewable energy sources was connected, compared to 3.7 GW in 2022, while according to the data for the current year, it is clear that there is still an entire quarter left to this year surpasses the mentioned figures.
