The independent European safety organization Euro NCAP has looked into the safety systems of new heavy goods vehicles, with its new Truck Safe program.
The objective of programme Truck Safe d’Euro NCAP is to encourage manufacturers to improve the safety of their heavy goods vehicles. For the first batch of tests, no less than nine truck models were tested.
A new program dedicated to heavy goods vehicle safety
Euro NCAP’s Truck Safe is the first program of its kind in the trucking sector. heavy goods vehicles : it aims to improve truck safety and reduce the death rate caused by trucks across Europe. These new tests focus on real-world collisions, and will encourage manufacturers to install collision avoidance technologies, while improving driver visibility.
For the first batch of tests, no less than nine truck models were tested: the DAF XF, Iveco S-WAY, MAN TGX, Mercedes-Benz Trucks Actros, Renault Trucks T, Scania R-series, Scania G-series, Volvo FH as well as the Volvo FM.
In detail, the DAF XF scored 85% in driving safety, 35% in collision avoidance, and 80% for post-collision safety. These results allow it to obtain an overall rating of three stars.
L’Iveco S-WAY scored 32% in driving safety, 19% in collision avoidance, and 80% for post-collision safety. These results earn it an overall rating of just one star.
Euro NCAP Truck Safe: new trucks on the test bench
The AND TGX scored 56% in driving safety, 60% in collision avoidance, and 80% for post-crash safety. These results allow it to obtain an overall rating of three stars.
The Mercedes-Benz Actros L scored 72% in driving safety, 51% in collision avoidance, and 80% for post-collision safety. These results allow it to obtain an overall rating of three stars.
The Renault Trucks T scored 72% in driving safety, 70% in collision avoidance, and 80% for post-crash safety. These results allow it to obtain an overall rating of four stars.
The Scania R-series scored 64% in driving safety, 62% in collision avoidance, and 80% for post-collision safety. These results allow it to obtain an overall rating of three stars.
The Scania G-series scored 71% in driving safety, 62% in collision avoidance, and 80% for post-collision safety. These results allow it to obtain an overall rating of four stars.
The Volvo FH Aero scored 80% in driving safety, 89% in collision avoidance, and 80% for post-collision safety. These results allow it to obtain the maximum overall rating of five stars.
The Volvo FM scored 87% in driving safety, 89% in collision avoidance, and 80% for post-collision safety. These results allow it to obtain the maximum overall rating of five stars.
