Although both hail from Texas, Rodney Connell and Brandon Duhon met for the first time in Mexico City at a midnight screening of Panos Kosmatos’ Beyond the Black Rainbow. They soon express their mutual admiration for the film’s visuals and synth soundscapes, and discover that they are both musicians whose previous bands have just broken up. Through this serendipity, Night Drive was born.

After their explosive debut, Position I, drummer Nick (Nick) Dudek joined the duo and became the final piece of the machine, and Night Drive was officially launched into orbit. The next eponymous release, the first long-playing one, received very positive reviews from the professional public and fans, which allowed them to spread their wings musically and reach new commercial heights.

The upcoming album, Position II, is the second in a series of EPs whose name is actually based on a dream. “I had a dream that our band was called ‘The Positions,'” Brendon explained. “Since we were already established as Night Drive, we had the idea to release a series of EPs called ‘Position I’, ‘Position II’, etc., which would eventually culminate in a compilation album of the same name”. Recorded mostly at EaDo Studios in Houston, this collection of songs was a reflection of the strange modern times we live in, with themes of uncertainty, longing, hope and discovery. From the hypnotic synth-dance opening of “Digital Flower”, through the attractive post-punk vibes offered by “Summerwaves” and “White Lights”, to the intense fervor provided by “Vultures” and “Cover Your Eyes”, the journey is painted in dark colors. It closes with the gloomy, dreamy track “Space Station” that feels somehow detached, but also deeply personal at the same time. It’s a journey, even though it’s only 22 minutes long.

To mix the release of Position II, the band turned to experienced producer Philip Broussard (Philip Broussard) from Los Angeles, who has worked as the right hand of industry giants such as Rick Rubin (Rick Rubin).

In the 1980s, the world was a bad place with humming synth-pop duets. But Night Drive goes beyond mere imitation. While that era is evoked in their instrumentation, their sound is modern and foreboding on their self-titled debut released June 16 on Roll Call Records. Rodney Conel and Brendon Duhon claim in their biography that they met after the woman they were both dating – without knowing it – was tragically killed in a car accident. True or not, it’s a strange story for a duo whose energetic debut is shrouded in mystery.

Inspired by sci-fi movie landscapes, Night Drive creates modern synth-pop that explores darker currents of abstract emotion. Catchy melodies wrapped in expressive lyrics with pulsating dance beats reveal a modern, energetic sound that has been featured on film, television and radio around the world. Touring with acclaimed bands such as Crystal Castles, Ladytron, CHVRCHES, Austra and The Psychedelic Furs, Night Drive has built a reputation as a stunning, must-see live concert attraction.

With a string of singles and last year’s Position II EP, it’s no surprise that this dark synth-pop trio is making such a fantastic impression. They are currently on tour and finishing a new record that should see the light of day in early 2025. In November, the band will perform at the prestigious Levitation festival.
