Nintendo is turning the legendary Game Boy into a LEGO set for 2025

Nintendo continues to make unexpected announcements, and the latest of them comes in the form of a partnership with another widely loved brand.

The Japanese video game giant has revealed that it will launch in October 2025 a replica of the iconic Game Boy that will be built entirely from the famous LEGO pieces.

What we know about the new LEGO Game Boy set

Although details are still scarce with only one available teaser of 15 seconds that shows us a single piece – the directional pad characteristic of the console -, this project promises to be as spectacular as the previous collaboration between the two companies.

In 2020, Nintendo and LEGO jointly released a replica of the NES console, which also included a retro TV showing the first level of Super Mario Bros. That set contained no less than 2,646 pieces and cost the equivalent of 194 euros.

A more accessible project

Being a portable console, it is expected that the new LEGO Game Boy set will be more compact and, implicitly, have a more affordable price.

It’s a wise decision considering that for the same amount, enthusiasts can purchase a Nintendo Switch Lite that can run Game Boy games.

The question on fans’ lips is whether this replica will be able to run games. Looking at previous LEGO sets inspired by classic consoles, such as the Atari 2600 or the Pac-Man arcade, the answer seems to be no.

Will LEGO Game Boy be just a model or something more?

This announcement is part of a series of exciting initiatives from Nintendo unrelated to the long-awaited Switch 2.

Last year, the company released an alarm clock called Alarmo, opened a museum in Kyoto and developed a music streaming service that offers access to classic video game songs.

Nostalgia and perfect timing for release

The release of this LEGO Game Boy replica is perfectly timed, at a time when nostalgia for retro handheld consoles is at an all-time high.

The acclaimed release of the ModRetro Chromatic last year and the recent success of the Analogue Pocket console with its colorful variants prove that there is a consistent audience for such products that celebrate gaming history.
