Nintendo persuades developers to shut down emulators

At the beginning of the year, Nintendo sued the developers of the Switch emulator Yuzu and, among other things, got Github to remove all clones of the open source project. During Tuesday disappeared all of a sudden the other popular Switch emulator – Ryujinx – from Github for no apparent reason.

Of course, speculation about what happened immediately began. Ryujinx doesn’t contain any of the files that Yuzu had and gave Nintendo’s lawyers something to attack, so the emulator has been deemed safe on that front, but there was clearly still a concern. It soon emerged, however, that it was not about a new lawsuit.

One of the developers wrote on the project’s Discord server that Nintendo contacted the lead developer of the emulator, gdkchanon Monday with an “offer” in exchange for shutting down the project and removing the entire organization from Github. Ryujinx has thus been sold out by the developer.

Message from the developers about what has happened to Ryujinx..

The fact that there is no lawsuit or request to Github to take down the project in accordance with the US DMCA means that clones of Ryujinx will probably appear soon. But without the main developer at the helm, it is not certain that any clone will succeed in getting development started again and the emulator risks getting stuck in its current state.

When Yuzu disappeared, several clones appeared but after a few months only Suyu seems to be left, which although has an active community on Reddit and a number of developers but is not at all developing at the same pace as Yuzu or Ryujinx have been.
