NIO Denies Talks for Audi’s Belgian Factory

“How can NIO support the expenses for a factory if Audi can’t do it?” With this sentence, after just over 24 hours, the rumours that the Chinese company was about to take over the Belgian plant in Vorst, where the Audi is currently produced, have been extinguished.Audi Q8 e-tron but about to be discontinued by the German company. The one who pronounced them was William Li, CEO of NIO.

Factory employing approximately 3,000 workers, who have recently started protests against the closure of the plant.

Chinese in Europe

No European factory for NIO therefore, which would have allowed the Chinese brand to avoid the duties on electric cars of Beijing, for which Europe will vote soon. Something that other Eastern manufacturers are instead considering, such as BYD, working to inaugurate a plant in Hungary.

For now, NIO is instead focusing on the launch of the new sub-brand Onvojust presented in China with the L60, a medium electric coupé SUV ready to compete with the Tesla Model Y. Deliveries in the domestic market will begin on September 28, with prices starting at 49,900 yuan (about 19,000 euros). A particularly aggressive price list, especially considering the car’s specifications: basic battery from 60 kWh to 800 Volts for 555 km of autonomy, while the most powerful one is equipped with 85 kWh accumulators that promise a maximum range of 730 km. As regards the Engines you can have the 326 hp rear-wheel drive or the 462 hp all-wheel drive.

Looking at Audi and the workers at the Vorst plant, there is therefore no news. The Belgian one may not be the only Volkswagen Group factory to close its doors: in Wolfsburg they are in fact going through a complicated period and after the break with the unions, layoffs and closures could begin from mid-2025.
