Nissan could have its own version of the new Renault Twingo. The small-class electric would cost less than 20,000 euros

Nissan wants to bring an affordable electric model to the European market, and to fulfill its plan, the Japanese manufacturer is turning to Renault.

The French have already announced that the Twingo will return to the range from 2026, this time in the form of a city model, which will have a starting price of less than 20,000 euros. For its part, Nissan wants to do something similar, and for this it seems that it is even turning to Renault to produce an affordable electric model, according to Reuters.

Thus, the new generation Nissan Micra could be built on the basis of the future electric Renault Twingo. The Japanese manufacturer appears to have already started talks with the Ampere division of its Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance partner. Nissan’s new small class electric model would use the AmpR Small platform, the same one that will be used by the new Twingo. The same platform is also used for the new Renault 4 and Renault 5.

Makoto Uchida, the company’s chief executive, said the firm plans to return to the small and affordable car market with the help of platforms it has available from its group partner Renault.

Thus, Nissan would reduce costs and development times by using existing platforms. Moreover, the collaboration with the electric division Ampere could mark the return to a segment in which it has not been active for over a decade, given the fact that the Japanese have focused on a range composed of SUVs.

In addition to the new Micra generation, which will have zero emissions, Nissan wants to relaunch the Leaf model, this time in the form of a crossover. The Japanese also want to launch electric versions of the Juke and Qashqai in the future.
