Nissan is recalling 23,887 Leafs because they could catch fire

Nissan is recalling 23,887 Leafs in the US, produced between August 29, 2018 and November 3, 2020, because they may catch fire during fast charging.

According to Nissan, the batteries of the recalled cars may have excessive lithium deposits in their cells, which increases electrical resistance and may cause the state of charge to fluctuate. When the car is on level 3 fast charging, the increased electrical resistance can quickly heat up the battery, increasing the possibility of a fire.

Nissan says owners of affected Leafs may notice smoke, noise, intermittent charging or thermal odors coming from the battery pack while charging.

The problem will be fixed by installing new software and until it is, Nissan is urging owners to avoid Level 3 fast charging.
