On November 6, 2024, the Orthodox Church celebrates Saint Paul the Confessor, Patriarch of Constantinople, known for his devotion to the Christian faith and his power to perform miracles. This saint was a fervent defender of Orthodox teachings against the Arian heresy, which denied the full divinity of Jesus Christ.
Paul was elected Patriarch of Constantinople, but he encountered strong opposition from the Arians and the Emperor Constantius, which is why he was exiled several times. His death occurred in a tragic way: while officiating the Holy Liturgy in exile, in Armenia, he was strangled by the Arians. His relics were later brought to Constantinople during the reign of Emperor Theodosius and later to Venice as a mark of respect and regret for his persecution.
This day is a time of celebration and prayer, where Christians pray to Saint Paul the Confessor for protection and blessings. It is customary for people with the names Pavel, Paul, Paula and their derivatives to celebrate their name day.
Etymology / meaning of the name Pavel – Paul / Paula
First of all “Happy Birthday!” to all those who bear the name of Saint Hierarch Paul the Confessor!
Pavel – is nothing but the Romanian form of the Latin Paul, softened in the vocabulary of our language under Greek-Slavic influence.
The deadline it could be translated by the adjective “paullus” (“small” or “humble”), being related to “paucus” or “pauper” (“poor”).
Saint Paul later joined the apostolic band, following the conversion on the road to Damascus, when he heard the voice of the Lord: “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?”. From the persecutor, Saint Paul would become, under his new name (translated and interpreted as a profound expression of humility), the most persistent preacher of the Gospel.
