“No one is left helpless in the NHS” – What will be applied for on-call surgeries, emergency rooms and personal doctor – different

Adonis Georgiadis used harsh language during the press conference at the Ministry of Health for the attempt to discredit the NHS.

“For purely political purposes there is an attempt, mainly by trade unionists of the left and our political opponents, to convey the image that the NHS has been left to its own devices”, emphasized the Minister of Health Adonis Georgiadis, who stated that there are problems when the system serves daily 80,000 people and 25 million visitors a year. “It is a mistake a failure that is exaggerated to do injustice to the system and the effort that is being made. No one is left helpless in the NHS” he said emphatically.

Criticism to be of value must be in good faith and based on real data, he then emphasized and added “We cannot constantly prove that we are not elephants. Propaganda is false. The prime minister and we are worried about public health and the NHS”.

He also pointed out that… “We must resist the discrediting of the System not for political reasons but so that the people’s trust in it is not shaken. We cannot hear that we are indifferent, that we want to dissolve the NHS and privatize it.”

At the same time, he referred in detail to the program for free afternoon surgeries for citizens who cannot afford to pay for surgery.

“The program concerns 37,000 citizens who have been waiting over four months to a year to be operated on,” Mr. Georgiadis emphasized, adding that “we have already received the green light from the technical levels that this reform will work. The final decision of the EU on the resources of the Recovery Fund is awaited. The 51 million euros required have already been pledged.” According to him, this decision is expected by the end of the year at the latest.

Also, the Minister of Health clarified that because the volume of free surgeries is expected to be increased – at least at the beginning of their implementation – several of them will be able to be done in the private sector as well. “We are also considering the possibility for some operations, such as cataracts, for example, to give vouchers to the beneficiaries so that they can do these operations completely free of charge wherever they wish”, he pointed out.

The same will apply – i.e. zero participation of the citizens who will enter the program of free surgeries – regardless of whether the surgeries will be performed in the NHS or in a private hospital, concluded Mr. Georgiadis.

Agapidaki: “Aim to add additional pediatricians to cover more than half a million children free of charge”

At the Press Conference, Deputy Minister of Health Irini Agapidaki referred to the bill for the personal doctor, which, as she said, will include other provisions as well as actions related to prevention, an area that is a priority for the government. “Our goal is to add additional pediatricians to cover more than half a million children for free,” he pointed out and added that “we must create new conditions and build the system with new materials.”

By the end of the week or at the beginning of the next, the bill for the personal doctor and the strengthening of Primary Health Care (PHY), as he announced during a press conference on the specialization of the government’s health priorities, will be submitted to public consultation. the Deputy Minister of Health, Irini Agapidaki.

He also announced that for the first time the part of child care is being strengthened. In the first phase, there will be free coverage for more than 500,000 children.

He referred to the screening program, announcing that the colon cancer prevention program is starting in the next few days, and called on citizens not to ignore the sms for simple preventive tests.

The Deputy Minister of Health noted that the problems of the National Health Service are due to the leakage of human resources and the chronic pathologies with a common denominator being the lack of organization. “Until now there was no organized prevention system and today the state comes and organizes this system. This will happen in every sector of the NHS”, he stressed.

“The new NHS needs new materials and if we want better health services, new skills and new specialties are needed. People who will be able to cope with modern needs. This is what we are investing in”, concluded Mrs. Agapidaki.

Mrs. Agapidaki reiterated the basic points of the bill, such as the financial incentives for young doctors who will choose general medicine or pathology (30,000 euros), the staffing of the personal doctor system with 2,500 more doctors, so that, as she said, all citizens to have their own personal doctor and the establishment of seven university health centers that will also undertake the part of telemedicine in the islands.

Themistocleous: Every day 3,500 thousand people are operated on in the ESY

For his part, the Deputy Minister of Health, Marios Themistokleous, made public the lists of personnel currently serving in the NHS and added: “Every day, 3,500 thousand people are operated on in the NHS, 60,000 go through outpatient clinics and 6,500 thousand are hospitalized. If the NHS did not work, society would also collapse. It’s one thing to say that the NHS has problems, another to say that it’s collapsing.” The NHS has never been supported as much as it is now, concluded and released comparative data on what the government received on July 7, 2019 and what is happening today.
