No RCS in the Netherlands for the time being

Starting with iOS 18 and today’s launch of iPhone 16, Apple’s Messages app on iPhone supports RCSthe successor of SMS. But no telecom party offers RCS in the Netherlands yet.

With RCS, Apple users can exchange messages with Android users for the first time without having to rely on third-party apps like WhatsApp.

RCS supports group chats and high-resolution image and video sharing, among other things.

However, RCS will not be available in the Netherlands in the short term. KPN is working on it, but cannot say when the technology will be rolled out.

Vodafone itself offered RCS for Android users a few years ago, but stopped doing so a year ago.

Odido (formerly T-Mobile) can make no promises at all. And as long as the three most important telecom providers do not support RCS, after all they have their own networks, virtual providers cannot either.

It is striking that Base, Proximus and Telenet do offer RCS support in Belgium.

Android users can already send RCS messages to each other. Google then sends and receives the RCS messages via its own Jibe servers. The Messages app will then ask you to accept the Jibe Mobile terms of service.
