North Korea denies sending troops to join Russia in Ukraine

North Korea denies claims that its soldiers have joined Russian troops in Ukraine, The Kyiv Independent reports.

North Korea has dismissed reports that it has sent soldiers to fight alongside Russia in the conflict in Ukraine, calling them “baseless rumours,” according to South Korea’s Yonhap news agency, citing a North Korean representative at the United Nations. This is the first public reaction of Pyongyang to the multiple information about such a development, coming from Ukraine and South Korea.

Ukraine’s president has said that Moscow plans to involve North Korea in all-out war against Ukraine, with around 10,000 North Korean troops set to join the Russian military.

The head of the Ukrainian military intelligence service, Kirilo Budanov, mentioned, for his part, that the first grouping of 2,600 soldiers will be deployed in the Kursk region of Russia, where Ukraine began a cross-border incursion in August.

At the UN meeting, the North Korean representative described relations between Pyongyang and Moscow as “legitimate, friendly and cooperative”. He stated that his delegation does not feel the need to comment on “stereotypical rumours” aimed at discrediting the image of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK). The Kremlin called these statements “contradictory”, without confirming or denying the information.

However, North Korea began supplying Russia with ballistic missiles and large quantities of artillery shells.
