It has been reported that North Korean authorities continue to demand that workers dispatched overseas contribute to flood recovery costs. There are complaints among workers dispatched overseas that the authorities’ demands for donation of funds are excessive.

According to Daily NK’s Russian North Korea news source on the 14th, early this month, a North Korean trading company that manages dispatched workers was ordered to pay $50 per worker in the name of flood recovery. These instructions are said to apply uniformly to both civilian and military workers dispatched to Russia.

This newspaper reported that in early August, North Korean authorities ordered workers dispatched to Russia to pay flood damage recovery costs of $70 per person. (See related article: Request for ‘dedication’ from workers dispatched to Russia in the name of flood recovery)

Although the amount has decreased by $20 this time, North Korean workers are said to be dissatisfied with the question, “How long do we have to pay the flood recovery costs?”

It is known that military workers who work hard for more than 10 hours a day receive only $100 a month from trading companies. However, due to requests for donations of funds in the name of supporting damage recovery, even this has not been fully received recently.

Nevertheless, military workers seem to be taking a breather as orders to pay flood recovery costs were issued again this month.

Trading companies that manage Russian workers automatically deduct more than 80% of the workers’ salaries every month in the name of party funds and youth union fees, and the workers ask, ‘Can’t we just cover the cost of flood damage from the money we already collect?’ Sources say that they sometimes vent.

Meanwhile, it has been revealed that the North Korean authorities have continued to demand that North Korean workers dispatched to China contribute funds for flood recovery. The funds needed for flood recovery are being blatantly burdened with workers dispatched overseas.

According to Chinese sources in North Korea, the North Korean authorities ordered its workers in China early this month to pay the rest of their monthly salary to the authorities, excluding 500 yuan (approximately 95,000 Korean Won) for living expenses. It is said that this is the third time such an order has been given.

Dong-A Ilbo reported that in early August, North Korean authorities issued instructions to trading companies in China to pay cash to support flood recovery, and as a result, North Korean workers in China paid all of their salaries except 500 yuan for living expenses to the authorities. The source said, “There is a limit to raising cash from the people in the country (North Korea), so we continue to deduct the cost of flood recovery from the salaries of workers living abroad,” adding, “Even though workers work hard all day, they do this and that.” “Once it’s removed, there’s nothing left and they feel dejected,” he said.
