North Korea has said it has successfully launched a new intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) with a hypersonic warhead, saying the weapon will reliably help deter enemies in the Pacific region.
Pyongyang announced on Monday that the missile flew about 1,500 kilometers at a speed 12 times the speed of sound, and that the missile test was led by leader Kim Jong Un, the North Korean news agency KCNA reported.
“The hypersonic missile system will reliably stop any rival in the Pacific region that can threaten the security of our country,” the agency stated.
The South Korean military announced today that it detected the launch of an IRBM missile from the area of Pyongyang, and that the missile flew about 1,100 kilometers before falling into the East Sea, the South Korean agency Yonhap reported.
