Recently, it was reported that a university in North Korea was specially selecting transfer students to raise funds for reconstruction. Accordingly, there is criticism about paying money to enter university.

According to a source from Daily NK in North Pyongan Province, Cha Kwang Soo-sin’s Uiju College of Education conducted a physical examination and physical fitness test for transfer applicants for three days starting on the 18th.

The university was also known to have conducted written and oral exams remotely before taking the physical examination, and 10 students received transfer permission through these exams.

Usually, North Korean universities select few transfer students or only about two at the most. This case of 10 transfer students being selected at once is considered rare.

According to our coverage, Cha Kwang Soo-sin’s Uiju Teachers’ College is currently rebuilding its temporary building. It is said that demolition work began last year and was completed early this year.

However, due to insufficient construction costs, transfer students who were not originally planned had to be recruited, and it is known that transfer students were selected in a hurry.

In fact, it is known that the parents or relatives of many of those who passed the transfer are executives of major organizations such as Sinuiju Customs, City Security Bureau, North Pyongan Provincial Party, and Sinuiju City Party Committee.

According to a source familiar with the school’s internal circumstances, the school even investigated students’ backgrounds during the selection process to help secure funds for reconstruction.

It is even known that among the students who passed the transfer this time, there are working youth (young people who got a job after graduating from an advanced middle school without going to college) who failed the exam last February.

It is not easy for a working youth to receive a letter of recommendation for a university, and it is almost impossible for a working youth who has been rejected once to be accepted to the same university again. Therefore, there is talk that this young laborer’s relative is a powerful executive.

Meanwhile, the transfer students who passed this time are said to be planning to complete a separate preliminary course instead of taking this class in the second half of this year.

They will begin formal classes starting in February next year, but it has been reported that they will not have to attend school for the next six months.

Since this is not a typical course completion process for transfer students, there is criticism among students that ‘transfer was accomplished through capitalist measures.’

Rather than transferring through a fair admission process, he was admitted to the university through expedient means using money and power.

Moreover, some students are reported to be feeling relative deprivation due to this transfer process.

However, the school is showing that there is no problem with selecting students for the purpose of receiving support for building reconstruction costs.

The source said, “From the perspective of school executives, including college deans and party secretaries, the task of completing the current construction as soon as possible is enormous,” adding, “The school is not supplied with construction materials at all from the government, so the school must receive support on its own. “The position is that other than accepting students, what kind of support can we receive?”

He also mentioned, “Because there is no state support, no matter how much a teacher’s college trains socialist educators, selecting students with money or power to survive will continue in the future.”
