Republican Senator Rand Paul strongly rejected the use of the military to deport illegal immigrants:
According to Paul, it would send an extremely negative message if thousands of soldiers marched in American cities to deport immigrants.
The senator reminded him that a 19th-century law prohibits the use of federal troops for domestic law enforcement purposes without congressional authorization. While Paul supports deporting illegal immigrants with criminal records, he says law enforcement is better suited to that than the military. He also warned to comply with the fourth amendment of the constitution, which prohibits unreasonable searches and seizures.
Trump confirmed on social media that he would declare a national emergency and deploy military assets for the largest deportation operation in US history. Trump campaign spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt emphasized in a statement that the president will involve all necessary federal and state forces in the operation.
Other Republican politicians have also spoken out on the matter. Representative Byron Donalds called the use of the army an exaggeration, but according to him, even the threat itself can be a deterrent. Senator John Barrasso, on the other hand, believed that the military could be used appropriately in the event of a national emergency.
