Not just Mick Schumacher: Alpine announces another driver deal

Mick Schumacher has extended his contract with Alpine and will be racing in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) for a second year. The racing team also announced another driver deal on Thursday.

WEC team Alpine has announced its squad for the coming season. It is now clear: Mick Schumacher will also be there again.

The 25-year-old had kept the racing team waiting for a long time; he only announced his extension on Thursday, after an offer had been made to him some time ago. Schumacher had hoped until the end that another door might open in Formula 1, but in the end he finally ended his chapter and at the same time announced his departure from Mercedes. There he was active as a reserve driver behind Lewis Hamilton and George Russell for two years.

Mick Schumacher will now meet a new addition to the French factory team, as the team announced: Frederic Makowiecki.

The 44-year-old is one of the absolute veterans; he has been driving in the Endurance World Championship since 2012. Most recently he drove for the Porsche works team.

“As a French driver, I am very proud. It is special to represent a French manufacturer in the WEC and to have the opportunity to aim for overall victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, especially since Alpine has a rich motorsport history,” said Makowiecki his change.

Schumacher colleague is promoted to sports director

The 2024 season was one of the most successful for Makowiecki. He and his team reached the podium four times, in Qatar, Imola, Sao Paolo and Bahrain, and took fifth place in the drivers’ standings together with Matt Campbell and Michael Christensen. For Mick Schumacher, who came third at the 6 Hours of Fuji and landed on a podium for the first time, he only managed 22nd place.

The four other Alpine riders for the coming season are the Austrian Ferdinand Habsburg as well as Charles Milesi, Paul-Loup Chatin and Jules Gounon, who is moving up from substitute to regular rider. Nicolas Lapierre and Matthieu Vaxiviere are no longer part of the squad; the former is promoted to sports director.

It is not yet known in which constellations the six drivers will drive for Alpine.
