Noteworthy: Paris bans the sale of diesel at gas stations

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo is busy improving air quality in her city. In addition to a 50 km/h speed limit and extremely high parking fees for SUVs, it has also banned a number of major petrol stations from selling diesel. The gas stations are located in strategic locations such as Porte d’Orléans, Porte d’Aubervilliers, Porte de Clignancourt and Quai d’Issy-les-Moulineaux, writes the Belgian website Gocar.be. These pumps – all located near the Périphérique ring road – are no longer allowed to sell diesel, regardless of the type of vehicle. Within a few years, Hidalgo plans to expand this ban to all gas stations in the city. The aim is to gradually phase out diesel from the capital, an ambition that the mayor of Paris has harbored since her first term in 2014. Residents of Paris and tourists visiting the city can now go to fourteen gas stations that continue to offer diesel in the French capital. But for a city with 2.1 million inhabitants, the majority of whom still drive diesel cars, that is poor. Experts believe that this will lead to queues during busy times, especially during the holiday period when many Dutch people near Paris need to refuel.
