“Everything is under control!”, said the conservative chairwoman of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, when she stepped out of the room on Wednesday evening, where the parliament’s three center groups had just reached an agreement, which paved the way for approving the new EU Commission.
And control has come in more ways than one, seen through conservative eyes. When the EU Commission is approved on Wednesday, two thirds of it will consist of commissioners from the right wing. And in a central, leading vice-chairman position, you will find Italian Raffaele Fitto from the extreme right-wing group ECR.
