Construction of Units 3 and 4 of the Shin Hanul Nuclear Power Plant in Uljin, Gyeongbuk, has been approved.
The Nuclear Safety and Security Commission held its 200th meeting on the 12th and announced that it would approve the construction plan for Shin Hanul Units 3 and 4.
The construction of the nuclear power plant comes about eight years after Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power applied for a permit in 2016. It is the first new nuclear power plant in eight years and three months since Saeul Units 3 and 4 (then Shin-Kori Units 5 and 6) in June 2016.
Considering that the project had been suspended for a long time, the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission changed the date of application of the technical standards in the permit documents to the latest standards and checked safety. The Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety (KINS), a safety regulation specialist agency under the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission, also reviewed the safety of the construction site and confirmed that there were no disasters that could affect the safety of the nuclear power plant.
These results were reported at the original plan committee meeting held last month.
Shin Hanul Units 3 and 4 are pressurized water reactors (APR1400) with an electric output capacity of 1,400 megawatts (MW). They are the same design as the currently operating Saeul Units 1 and 2 and Shin Hanul Units 1 and 2.
