NVIDIA has a problem. Its biggest customers, such as Microsoft, Amazon or Google, are delaying or canceling orders for new Blackwell components due to their problems – and the company’s shares are reacting.
NVIDIA introduced the new generation of Blackwell for enterprise already last year. Even then, however, the first problems with overheating appeared, as a result of which NVIDIA she reportedly made several changes to her seagull design. Unfortunately, it didn’t seem to help.
NVIDIA does not supply individual GB200s, but entire server solutions with up to 72 of these chips. However, their design, i.e. the cooling solution, is still insufficient and the racks fundamentally overheat.
Reuters magazine claims that the biggest players in the cloud market have fundamentally reduced their orders. The seagulls also overheat due to the large consumption of energy, up to 120-132 kW. For example, Microsoft had to completely cancel its order of Blackwell chips and instead ordered older Hopper chips, which are less powerful, but more reliable, based on OpenAI’s requirements.
It is not yet clear how much the orders have decreased – but in the end it doesn’t matter. The only way out for customers is to either buy the older generation or wait for the problems to be fixed. NVIDIA has no competition within the GB200, and customers practically have no other purchasing option.
