New graphics cards are coming Nvidia with architecture Blackwell. We know this from computing cards, and now it’s heading to gaming PCs as well. New ones are appearing GeForce RTX 5000in the form of higher mainstream and high-end models, namely RTX 5070, RTX 5070 Ti, RTX 5080 and RTX 5090. The novelty is e.g. DLSS 4 technology (Super Resolution DLAA, Ray Reconstruction and Multi Frame Generation) and in some cases the new graphics should offer up to 2x higher gaming performance than the previous generation. We also have the new Tensor Core of the 5th generation, the RT cores of the 4th generation are also new. Graphics cards are now designed for faster PCIe 5.0 slots, have a new 9th generation NVENC encoder and 6th generation NVDEC decoder. The new series continues to support AV1 video acceleration, the DX12 Ultimate interface and, newly, CUDA in version 12.8.
Most of the leaks from the last few days have been filled, so this is the peak GeForce RTX 5090a monster with 21,760 CUDA cores (a 33% increase). Thanks to the optimizations of Tensor cores for even more efficient calculations of artificial intelligence tasks, we can look forward to the performance of 3352 AI TOPS (predecessor of 1321 AI TOPS). The frequencies of the novelty went down surprisingly, the base clock decreased from 2.23 GHz to 2.01 GHz, the Boost frequency from 2.52 GHz to 2.41 GHz. They improved their memories, they have 32 GB on a 512-bit bus, it is a GDDR7 type. While there was a relatively large gap between the RTX 4080 and 4090, in the case of the RTX 5080 and 5090, the RTX 5090 is already in a completely different league by itself. After all, the price increase to 1999 USD is not surprising. It also consumes an insane 575 W. Still, it can do with a 2-slot cooler, and the premature longings of people in discussions who predicted 4 or more slots did not come true.
In contrast GeForce RTX 5080 keeps the high-end within reasonable limits. It is essentially half of the RTX 5090. It has 10,752 CUDA cores (predecessor 9,728 or 10,240 in the Super variant) and clocks of 2.3 GHz in the base or 2.62 GHz in Boost (predecessor 2.21/2.51 GHz or 2.29/2.55 GHz respectively), so as a result it reaches 1801 AI TOPS performance. Many were disappointed by the retention of the 256-bit bus and 16GB memory capacity, however, with 30Gbps chips we have a nice throughput of 960 GB/s. Consumption rose from 320 W to 360 W.
The price was a big scare, many people expected around 1500 USD. It ends up being $999, which is $200 less than the launch price of the RTX 4080, but the same as the upgraded RTX 4080 Super. Early public reaction to the RTX 5080’s price tag has been overwhelmingly favorable, and I’ve seen plenty of opinions where people considering the RTX 5070 Ti are now considering the more powerful RTX 5080.
GeForce RTX 5070 Ti it has the same GB203 chip, which means that it is much closer to the RTX 5080 than the RTX 5070. We find 8,960 CUDA cores here (predecessor 7,680 or 8,448 in the Super version). At clocks of 2.3 GHz, or 2.45 GHz in Boost (predecessor 2.31/2.61 GHz) achieves 1406 AI TOPS performance. Thanks to the same chip, the same 16GB GDDR7 memory on a 256-bit bus remains, but it just doesn’t have such a high clock rate. Consumption increased from 285 W to 300 W. The price was set at 749 USD.
It’s finally here GeForce RTX 5070. The latter improved its 5,888 CUDA cores only slightly to 6,144 cores (so it has less than the RTX 4070 Super), clocks went up to 2.16 GHz, or 2.51 GHz in Boost (predecessor 1.92/2.48 GHz). As with the previous generation, unfortunately the 192-bit bus remains here, and thus only 12 GB of memory. But it is faster thanks to GDDR7 chips. Consumption is now 250 W. The weakest newly introduced GeForce will cost 549 USD.
Nvidia also published graphs, but they are built to highlight performance when using ray-tracing. However, the pure raster performance of the cards will certainly not be significantly better (after all, the clocks and number of cores have not changed fundamentally, with the exception of the RTX 5090), so we will have to wait for the first reviews here.
