What is this Nvidia TV box?
Nvidia’s Android media box comes in two models, Standard and Pro. The cylindrical Standard model is compact and discreet, with dimensions of 16.5 cm long and 4 cm in diameter. However, a few concessions are necessary to make the Shield TV a small box, including the absence of a USB port. The Pro model, much larger, has dimensions of 5.9 × 9.8 × 2.6 cm and includes an HDMI port, an Ethernet port and two USB 3.0 ports. These connectors are useful for connecting one or more game controllers, or plugging in an external hard drive to increase storage space.
Both boxes are equipped with the Nvidia Tegra x1 SoC and integrate the Geforce Now cloud gaming service. The experience is fluid with both models, but it is clear that with 1 GB of additional RAM, the interface of the Pro model is much more responsive. The Standard model has 2 GB of RAM and an 8 GB hard drive (double for the Pro model), which you can increase via a microSD port. As for the interface under Android, it is pleasant to browse on both boxes, with ergonomic menus, highlighted content and a relevant recommendation system.
Are these boxes worth it for Prime Day?
Prime Day is a good opportunity to get Nvidia Shield TVs at a lower price. Compatible with 4K at 60 frames per second, as well as HDR10, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos standards, Shield TVs are ideal for watching content in the best conditions, if your TV is compatible. Note that Nvidia also offers an upscaling feature that improves 1080p HD images to 4K quality.
Add to that the ability to convincingly run games available on the Play Store, and you get a very complete box, among the best on the market. Players will also be able to enjoy their games purchased on the Steam or Uplay platforms in Full HD and 60 fps, if your connection allows it. Finally, the backlit remote control works in Bluetooth and integrates a microphone in order to use Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa.
