Official: MG ES5, replaces ZS EV

Hours after the leak, MG unveiled a new electric SUV in China today, which will replace the ZS EV in international markets including Europe, the UK and Australia, to completely differentiate it from the all-new ZS Hybrid.

The name MG ES5 is based on the same platform (Modular Scalable Platform, MSP) as the MG 4, and benefits from the latest developments in the company’s technology. It is by 162 mm. longer, reaching 4,476 mm, than the ZS EV, with its width being 1,849 mm, height 1,621 mm, while the wheelbase reaches 2,730 mm.

It has a sleeker design compared to its predecessor, with the ES5 adopting a clean language, with the front end lacking a grille like the MG 4. The bumper intakes are reminiscent of the Cyberster, while the split LED headlamps are more thinner and more aggressive than before. The profile is fairly neutral, while the full-width taillights have a similar shape to the MG4.

Mechanically, the ES5 will be powered by the same 125 kW (170 hp) and 250 Nm torque electric motor that powers the MG 4, with 0-100 km/h coming in 8 seconds. However, it’s quite possible that the new model will get the 150 kW (204 hp) and 180 kW (241 hp) electric motors from the Long Range and Extended Range versions of the MG 4, although this has yet to be confirmed.

In China, the SUV is offered with three options for the ultra-thin and new lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery, manufactured by the SAIC-CATL joint venture. Capacity is 49.1 kWh or 62.2 kWh, offering a maximum range of 425 km, 514 mm. or 525 km, depending on version, according to CLTC protocols.
