Szinvár was already identified at the scene after his killing on the basis of dental and other evidence, including his wristwatch, and the Israeli police said that its identification department also confirmed his identity with photographs taken from the scene. Israeli experts can make quick and accurate decisions based on teeth, the procedure was used several times during the war.
The final, the results of the examination based on DNA samples are also expected soonbut according to the experts interviewed on commercial television number 13, this is more of a formal matter, they are practically certain that Jahja esz-Szinvár was killed.
Szinvár was the plotter of the assassination on October 7 last year. His family originally came from al-Majsal, today’s Ashkelon, and after the establishment of Israel, they fled from there to the south, to the Gaza Strip, then part of Egypt. He was one of the founders of the Islamist terrorist organization Hamas in 1987. The Israeli authorities sentenced him to life imprisonment in 1989 because, as the head of the organization’s internal security, he killed at least ten Palestinians suspected of collaborating with Israel with his own hands.
He spent twenty-two years in an Israeli prison, where he learned Hebrew, and where Israeli doctors performed life-saving surgery on him, removing a brain tumor in 2008. Gilad Salit, who had been held captive by Hamas for seven years and was captured near the Gaza Strip, was released in 2011 in exchange for Israeli corporal Gilad Salit, and in 2017 he became the leader of Hamas in Gaza. After the killing of Ismáil Haníje at the end of July, he was elected head of the political office of the terrorist organization.
