Donald Trump has secured victory in the US state of Ohio and thus also takes the 17 electors that are up for grabs.
This is stated by the news agency AP on the basis of election data.
The state has played a rather central role in the presidential election campaign, as it is in Ohio – and more precisely the city of Springfield – that Trump has repeatedly claimed that Haitian migrants are eating residents’ pets.
The claim has been rejected by several local officials, but has gained a lot of focus in the intense US election campaign.
Despite Donald Trump’s comments, it was expected in advance that the Republican candidate would win in the state.
With more than half the votes counted, Trump has 54.1 percent of the vote in Ohio, while Democrat Kamala Harris has 45.1.
In some of AP’s latest calculations, Trump has also secured the Midwestern states of North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming.
Around 03:30 Danish time, AP also states that Donald Trump has won the large southern state of Texas. Here he has won 40 electors.
Nationally, Trump has secured an early lead in the presidential election.
He thus stands to have secured 178 electors, while Kamala Harris stands to 99. This is shown by the AP’s ongoing tally of state winners.
However, the position does not have to mean anything for the overall result. A lot can change as the night progresses.
Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin have been assessed in advance as swing states in this year’s election.
Pennsylvania in particular, where there are 19 electoral votes at stake, is expected to be decisive for who occupies the White House when the office passes to the next president on January 20.
In the 2020 presidential election, it took several days before the result was clear, precisely because the result was so close in some of the states.
