OIC calls on UNSC to take binding decision on ceasefire in Gaza

A joint statement was published after the OIC – Arab League Extraordinary Joint Summit held in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, and attended by leaders of Arab and Islamic countries.

In the declaration, “We condemn the international double standards in relations with Israel and call for respect for international law and the UN Charter.” statements were included.

In the declaration, which was envisaged to start working to gather international support to freeze Israel’s participation in the UN General Assembly, all countries were called to “ban the export or shipment of weapons and ammunition to Israel” and “to impose international sanctions to deter Israel from its violations.”

The efforts of Qatar and Egypt, in cooperation with the USA, to achieve an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza were appreciated, and it was stated that Israel had stepped back from the compromises reached regarding the prisoner exchange and ceasefire agreement.

The declaration warned that the Israeli attacks on Gaza, which lasted more than a year and spread to Lebanon, violated the sovereignty of Iraq, Syria and Iran, and stated that the UN could not take clear measures and the international community failed.

Demand for an independent international investigation into crimes committed by Israel

“We condemn the terrible and striking crimes committed by the occupying Israeli army in the Gaza Strip and demand an independent international investigation to hold those involved in these crimes accountable,” the statement said. The statement was included.

The declaration condemned Israel’s collective punishment against civilians in the Gaza Strip and its use of siege and starvation as weapons, and called for urgent international steps to be taken to end the humanitarian disaster in Gaza.

The declaration emphasized support for Lebanon, its security, stability, sovereignty and the well-being of the Lebanese people, and condemned Israel’s targeting of civilians, members of the Lebanese army and soldiers of the UN Lebanon Interim Peace Force (UNIFIL).

In the statement addressed to the international community, a call was made for the International Court of Justice’s “recommendatory opinion to end the Israeli occupation, to eliminate its effects and to compensate for the damages, to be implemented as soon as possible.”

The crime of enforced disappearance committed by the Israeli army against thousands of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and the occupied Palestinian territories in general since October 7, 2023 was condemned.

The statement emphasized that Israel’s attacks against UNIFIL forces in Lebanon constitute a direct violation of the UN Charter and called on the UNSC to hold Israel fully responsible.

Emphasis on two-state solution

A call was made to internationally active parties to implement an internationally protected plan to end the Israeli occupation, “for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with occupied Jerusalem as its capital, on the basis of a two-state solution.”

It called for efforts to ensure Palestine’s full membership in the UN and the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati and Qatar Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamed attended the summit, which is a continuation of the OIC-Arab League Joint Summit held in Riyadh on November 11, 2023, in line with the instructions of King Salman bin Abdulaziz of Saudi Arabia. Many Arab and Muslim country leaders, especially Al Thani, attended.

The first meeting of the OIC-Arab League Extraordinary Joint Summit was held on November 11, as a result of the combination of the Arab League Summit and the 8th Extraordinary Islamic Summit, which were planned to be held in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, under one roof to address Israel’s aggression against the Palestinian people. It was held in Riyadh in 2023.
