Oil vessel suspected of cable breakage is moved to a less exposed location

The oil vessel “Eagle S”, which is being investigated by Finnish police for possibly having sabotaged underwater cables, has been moved to a more protected anchorage.

The Finnish public service media YLE writes this on Saturday.

The vessel was off the Porkkala peninsula in the Gulf of Finland. It has been moved east of Helsinki close to the town of Kilpilahti.

There are approximately 70 kilometers as the crow flies from Porkkala to Kilpilahti.

– The site at Porkkala is more exposed to the weather, and it is more challenging for the authorities to gain access to the ship, says Heikki Porola, who is the chief commissioner of the police in Helsinki, according to YLE.

An electricity cable and several data cables running in the Baltic Sea between Finland and Estonia were damaged on 25 December.

Finnish police suspect that the tanker “Eagle S”, which sailed from Saint Petersburg on the night of December 25, caused the damage.

Finland’s customs service believes the ship is part of Russia’s shadow fleet, which evades sanctions by not sailing under the Russian flag.
