Defending champion Alexander Zverev is one of the German team’s big hopes for a medal at the Olympic Games in Paris. His brother Mischa is counting on a medal, as the tennis star has now recovered from his knee injury.
“Thank God the knee is not an issue, he hasn’t mentioned it since Hamburg. Sascha is now playing without a bandage,” Mischa Zverev revealed in an interview with “Eurosport”.
“He is fully focused on the tournament and the next matches. The court in Paris plays a little differently than it did a few weeks ago at the French Open, which is a surprise. That is the focus now,” added the ex-professional.
His younger brother had previously suffered a capsule injury in his knee at the Grand Slam tournament in Wimbledon. This slowed him down in his preparations for the Olympics. His appearance at the home tournament in Hamburg last week was in doubt for a long time.
Ultimately, Zverev played at the Rothenbaum in Hamburg, only narrowly losing to Frenchman Arthur Fils in the final.
Tennis at the Olympics different for Zverev than in Tokyo
“Reaching the final in Hamburg was important for Paris. I told him: ‘Sascha, if you want to play well in Paris, you need Hamburg and a few matches.’ It was all the nicer that we ended up in a final,” Mischa Zverev said, describing the importance of the tournament.
Alexander Zverev will start his Olympic competition in Paris on Monday (12 noon) against Spaniard Jaume Munar. After the gold medal in Tokyo, the family is once again enjoying successful matches.
“He should actually start the tournament very confidently. I think a medal is almost certain,” said Mischa.
After all, the conditions in Paris are even better than at the Corona Games three years ago in Japan. “Tokyo was nice because he was able to win. But he did it alone – without fans, without family and really far away from home.”
Paris, on the other hand, is now almost a home game and only a few hours’ drive away.
