American athlete Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone has smashed her own world record. In the final of the 400 meter hurdles at the Olympic Games, she ran a new personal best of 50.38 seconds.
Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone is the hurdles queen of Paris. In a thrilling final at the Stade de France, she not only won gold in the 400 m hurdles, but also broke her world record again.
After just a few meters, Femke Bol (Netherlands) and Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone were able to pull away from the field and jumped over their hurdles much earlier. After around 250 meters, both were on the same level and then McLaughlin-Levrone turned on the turbo. Within a few seconds, she put several meters between herself and Bol.
She was able to pick up the pace even further on the home stretch and won by a huge margin. With a time of 50.38 seconds, the American smashed her own world record, which she had only set at the end of June.
Third world record at the 2024 Olympic Games
Behind her, Bol collapsed and only came in third, winning bronze. Anna Cockrell, McLaughlin-Levrone’s teammate, also secured silver for the USA.
The duel between McLaughlin-Levrone and world champion Bol was eagerly awaited. The two are the only sprinters in history to have broken the 51-second mark in the 400 m hurdles. But the supposed duel turned into a solo show for the American.
McLaughlin-Levrone’s world record was the third athletics record at the Olympic Games in Paris. Three days earlier, pole vault star Armand Duplantis from Sweden had also raised his own record to an incredible 6.25 m.
In addition, there was another record in the still young mixed discipline over 4×400 m (3:07.41).
