Josha Salchow was the first German swimmer in 32 years to compete in the Olympic final of the 100 m freestyle – and finished sixth.
The Heidelberg native, who lives and trains in Australia, improved his German record from April (47.85) in 47.80 seconds at the Paris La Defense Arena.
Chinese world champion Pan Zhanle took gold with a world record (46.60), four tenths below his best mark from the World Championships in Doha in February.
Silver went to Salchow’s Australian training partner Kyle Chalmers (47.48) ahead of Romanian David Popovici (47.49).
Salchow finished eighth as the final swimmer in the German 4×200 m freestyle relay on Tuesday.
