Olympia: Gymnastics youngster Kevric in the all-around final

She had to wait until the evening, but now it’s clear: Helen Kevric has made it. The 16-year-old gymnast from Stuttgart has qualified for the all-around final at the Olympic Games in Paris.

With a total score of 53.865 points, she will definitely finish among the best 24 athletes – even though the competition still has a qualifying round to complete on Sunday evening. The decision in the all-around competition will be made next Thursday.

Early on Sunday afternoon, Kevric was impressed by the atmosphere in the Paris gymnastics arena after her performance: “I did my best and you have to get used to the whole situation first,” said Kevric after the qualification. “I was definitely overwhelmed by the atmosphere.”

The teenager is still hoping to make it to the finals for a second time: after a strong performance on the uneven bars, where she even finished ahead of world star Simone Biles, she is currently in seventh place. Biles is one place behind her, and the top eight will be in the final next Sunday.

Sarah Voss (Cologne) is still eyeing a place in the all-around final, she is currently ranked 20th. Whether she will make it to the final will be decided after the last qualifying round of the day, which begins at 9.10 p.m.

It was already clear after her faulty performance on Sunday afternoon that Pauline Schäfer-Betz (Chemnitz) would only be a spectator in the balance beam final. “I actually got off to a good start, but I couldn’t hold it in at the end,” said the 27-year-old, who is participating in her third Olympic Games. “It’s just a shame.” The women from the German Gymnastics Federation (DTB) were unable to qualify for the Olympics as a team.

Simone Biles attracted the most attention on Sunday by far. In front of celebrities such as Tom Cruise, Greta Gerwig and Ariana Grande, the American gave an impressive performance and can plan on the individual finals in the all-around competition as well as on the vault, floor and balance beam. Biles will also be competing for a medal in the team competition next Tuesday.
