The German hockey world champions can start the knockout phase of the Olympic Games with the wind in their sails.
The team of national coach André Henning beat Great Britain 2-1 (2-0) at the Stade Olympique Yves-du-Manoir in Paris at the end of the preliminary round and thus secured group victory. The DHB team had already secured its place in the quarter-finals.
Christopher Rühr (19th/25th, seven-meter shot) scored the goals for the selection of the German Hockey Federation, which thus took revenge for the defeat against the British in the 2023 European Championship semi-finals (4:5 nP).
Gareth Furlong (49th) was successful for Great Britain. With four wins and one loss to their name, the German hockey men moved past fellow favorites the Netherlands in the Group A table and will now face fourth-placed Argentina in the round of the best eight on Sunday.
Germany is aiming for its fifth gold medal in Paris after 1972, 1992, 2008 and 2012. At the last Summer Games in Tokyo in 2021, the DHB team had to settle for fourth place.
In the morning, the women’s hockey team also qualified for the quarter-finals with a 4:2 win against China. For the team of national coach Valentin Altenburg, the last group match on Saturday (7:45 p.m.) will be against European Championship runners-up Belgium to determine their place.
