One arrested with whale fish vomit worth 21 crores in Teknaf

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) arrested a person with ambergris or whale vomit, which is prohibited for sale, during a raid at Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar. This operation was conducted in Shahparirdwip area of ​​Sabrang Union of Upazila on Sunday.

The detained Shamshul Alam (35) is a resident of Saint Martin Island in the upazila. BGB Teknaf 2 battalion commander Lt. Col. Mohiuddin Ahmed confirmed the truth of the information.

According to the BGB, various valuable perfumes and medicines are made from whale vomit or ambergris, which is banned for sale. Smuggling of such valuable and rare items is a rare occurrence in Bangladesh.

Lt. Colonel Mohiuddin Ahmed said, a team of BGB conducted an operation on the news of organized smugglers smuggling goods through the border of Shahparir Dwip Bazar Para of Teknaf.

BGB members saw a suspicious person coming towards Bazar Para with a sack on his shoulder and ordered him to stop. Sensing the presence of BGB members, the person dropped the bag and tried to escape. At this time, he was chased and arrested.

After opening the sack, 8 kg 398 grams of ambergris or whale vomit was recovered. The estimated market value of these recovered ambergris is Tk 20 crore 99 lakh 50 thousand.

This BGB official said that the ambergris recovered on Monday morning was sent to the laboratory of Bangladesh Marine Research Institute (BORI) in Ramur. There the characterization and identification of ambergris is completed. Later, the ambergris was deposited in the treasury branch of the Deputy Commissioner’s office and a case was registered against the detained person at the Teknaf police station under relevant laws.
