In a short time, you can receive a brand new coin in your hand if you get a 20 kroner back in a shop or at the bank.
On Friday, the new succession coin will be sent out to the country from Danmarks Nationalbank.
The coin marks the change of throne, where a portrait of King Frederik will be on the obverse, while Queen Margrethe will be found on the reverse.
The change of throne took place on 14 January, but only now is the coin ready for use.
– Producing a coin is a lengthy process. At Danmarks Nationalbank we were also surprised on New Year’s Eve when the Queen abdicated, says Niels Kaas, head treasurer at Danmarks Nationalbank.
Since the turn of the year, Danmarks Nationalbank has been busy designing, developing and producing the coin.
In addition, the two portraits had to be approved by the royal protagonists themselves before the coins could finally be put into production by an external producer in Finland.
The coin is produced as a 20 kroner coin.
A total of one million of the new succession coins have been produced.
They will not replace the current coins, but will be sent into circulation in parallel with existing coins.
The coin lands on the street at a time when the use of cash is in retreat.
Last year, almost nine out of ten payments in physical stores were made digitally.
– Strictly speaking, there is no need for new coins, says Peter Løchte Jørgensen, who is professor of finance at Aarhus University.
According to the professor, the use of cash in Denmark is falling very quickly in these years.
– But it is not just around the corner that the cash will completely disappear, he says.
This is due, among other things, to the fact that some citizens are very dependent on them.
In addition, the National Emergency Management Agency’s recommendations for a home emergency are that it is advantageous to have a small amount in coins and small bills in the event of a crisis situation.
According to Danmarks Nationalbank, it will take a few weeks before you can expect to see the new coin in circulation in shops and banks.
First, the succession coins must be sent to the two cash handling companies in Denmark.
From there, they have to go to shops and banks and slowly slide in among the other cash.
Next year there will be more changes to the coins in circulation.
New 10 and 20 kroner coins will be updated with a portrait of King Frederik.
The 1, 2 and 5 kroner will also be updated with King Frederik’s monogram on it.
The coins are issued as regular circulation coins and are expected to be released during the second half of 2025.
