The Los Angeles forest fires could turn out to be the costliest in the history of the United States (US), with losses that could exceed 135 billion dollars (131 billion euros).
According to a preliminary estimate from Accuweather cited by the BBC, losses can vary between 135 billion and 150 billion dollarsas fires ravage an area that is home to some of the most expensive properties in the US.
As Negócios already wrote, the insurance industry is also bracing for a major blowwith analysts at Morningstar and JP Morgan predicting insured losses of more than $8 billion (€7.8 billion).
Civil protection officials on the scene say more than 5,300 structures were destroyed by the Palisades fire and more than 5,000 structures were destroyed by the Eaton fire.
“These fast-moving, wind-driven infernos created one of the costliest forest disasters in US history“, said AccuWeather chief meteorologist Jonathan Porter, quoted by the BBC.
The 2018 fire that broke out in Northern California, near the city of Paradise, is currently the disaster with the highest insured costs, at around $12.5 billion.according to insurance giant Aon.
