With its premiere in Official Competition at the Cannes Film Festival, Trump supporters have launched numerous petitions to ban the film from being released in the United States. However, the premiere on the North American continent took place on October 11, in the middle of an election year.

The film follows the former US president’s “Faustic pact” with influential right-wing lawyer Roy Cohn. In the 1970s and 1980s, Trump tried to build a real estate empire based on the properties of his father, Fred Trump, before entering politics. The lawyer sees Trump as the perfect protégé: someone with raw ambition, a hunger for success and a willingness to do anything to win.

scenario “it is not written to sway people’s opinion”said Gabriel Sherman – the screenwriter of the film – “everyone chooses what he wants to take from it. It is a universal story of the apprentice who surpasses his master”he added.

The Apprentice is directed by Ali Abbasi (known to the public in Romania for Holy Spider, Border know HBO series, The Last of Us). The role of Donald Trump is played by the actor of Romanian origin, Sebastian Stan, with whom the audience will be able to recognize in the cast of the film: Jeremy Strong (Succession, Armageddon Time, The Big Short), Martin Donovan (Tenet, Big Little Lies) and Maria Bakalova (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Borat Next Moviefilm).

The international press greeted the film with enthusiasm, praising the performances of the actors and the directorial perspective: “Sebastian Stan is excellent as the young Donald Trump” wrote the BBC while Entertainment Weekly headlined “The Apprentice offers a masterful palette of performances that go far beyond the usual copycat attempt of many Hollywood biopics.”

Variety finds the film “sharp and stinging”, the Associated Press considers it “provocative if not shocking, entertaining if not revelatory, impeccably acted and inherently controversial, which Ali Abbasi takes even further.”and The Hollywood Reporter adds: “Sebastian Stan and Jeremy Strong are superb in this chilling account of the unholy alliance that created Donald Trump.” The bottom line comes from Screen Rant: It’s “a damn good movie.”
