OnePlus announced its 13 and 13R smartphones for the international market

OnePlussa’s new top models are placed in the price range of 750-1150 euros.

As expected, OnePlus has released its new 13 smartphone collection, which consists of the OnePlus 13 flagship model and the slightly more affordable 13R model. The features of the OnePlus 13 flagship model were no longer a real surprise, because it was announced in China already at the end of last October. Instead, the OnePlus 13R saw the light of day for the first time.

The new model suddenly looks a lot like its predecessor, but the frame is more angular than before and the screen is no longer curved on the long sides. The frame and body structure are still aluminum, but the type of protective glass has changed from Corning’s product to glass branded as Ceramic Guard. OnePlus has improved the water protection to the IP68&69 level, which means the phone has been tested to withstand both immersion in water and high-pressure hot water jets. The color options are dark gray Black Eclipse, frosty white Arctic Dawn, and blue Midnight Ocean, which uses microfiber artificial leather in its back cover.

The 6.82-inch AMOLED screen also resembles the predecessor model in terms of its technical characteristics, but it is based on the newer BOE X2 LTPO 4.1 panel technology and offers e.g. new dynamic pixel-specific RadiantView brightness control and glove mode (Glove Mode). In addition, the screen is no longer curved on the long sides like in the predecessor model.

Inside the OnePlus 13, the Snapdragon 8 Elite flagship chip released by Qualcomm in October has been updated, which is promised up to more than 40% performance improvements compared to the previous generation. The size of the steam chamber cooling has also been increased by just under ten percent. The new BeaconLink feature enables radiotelephone-like operation with the help of Bluetooth from a distance of up to 200 meters, for example in conditions where the cellular network does not support.

Power is provided by a 6000 mAh battery, which has grown from the 600 mAh predecessor model, which uses silicon-carbon anode technology that enables better energy density. With 100-watt Super VOOC fast charging, the battery is promised to be filled from empty in about 36 minutes. In addition, 50-watt wireless AIRVOOC fast charging is also supported, with a new 50-watt magnetic fast charger sold as an accessory.

On the camera side, the main camera has remained the same from the previous generation, but the ultra-wide and telephoto cameras have been updated. The telephoto camera (3x) now uses Sony’s sensor with slightly larger pixels and a new Triprism lens, which enables the camera module to be made even smaller and lighter. The sensor of the ultra-wide-angle camera, on the other hand, has changed from Sony to Samsung and decreased in size, but at the same time the Aperture ratio has increased slightly. All three cameras support 4K 60 FPS Dolby Vision video recording.

On the software side, both models have OxygenOS 15, based on the Android 15 version, with new artificial intelligence features aimed at processing images and text, some of which, unfortunately, do not yet work in Finnish. Google’s Gemini and Circle to Search artificial intelligence features are also included in the phones. In addition, the manufacturer praises that the system files take up significantly less storage space than the previous version. OnePlus promises four Android version updates and six years of security fixes. In the OnePlus 13 model, the improvement is therefore one year for security fixes, and in the 13R model, one year for version updates and two for security fixes.

Like last year, the R model is OnePlussa’s more affordable high-end option. The body of the 13R is aluminum and the Gorilla Glass 7i protective glass released last summer is used in the shells. As a significant design change, the frame is shaped significantly more angular, and the front and rear glass no longer curve from the long sides towards the sides. The structure has IP65 dust and splash water protection.

The 6.78-inch AMOLED screen is almost identical to the predecessor model in terms of key technical values, but it is now flat and updated to use the newer LTPO 4.1 panel technology like the OnePlus 13. Inside is a dual vapor chamber cooled (9925mm2) Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 gen 3 flagship chip from last year, which still offers good performance in the 13R’s price range. The storage space has been upgraded to the newer UFS 4.0 technology.

Like the 13 model, the battery capacity has grown significantly to 6000 mAh, although technically in a slightly different single-cell implementation. Correspondingly, however, the maximum charging power has been slightly reduced from 100 watts to 80 watts, which is promised to fill the battery to half in 20 minutes and full in 52 minutes. So the charging time has practically doubled compared to the predecessor model, which cannot be explained solely by the increased battery size and slightly lower maximum power.

The triple rear camera is now even more versatile in its implementation. The main camera has been updated to use Sony’s LYT-700 sensor, which in itself is identical in resolution and sensor size to the predecessor model’s IMX890 sensor, but is able to collect light better, according to OnePlus. A completely new feature is the 50 megapixel normal/telephoto camera, which replaces the poor macro camera found in the predecessor model. The 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera is still fixed-focus and is otherwise inherited from the predecessor model.
