Opel Grandland – The second generation has arrived

A new member of the hybrid-electric “club”

The competition in the SUV segment is getting tougher every day. First, in the past 2 years, Renault launched the trio Austral, Rafale, Symboz, and Volkswagen responded less than a month ago with the Tayron model. That was the signal for Opel to urgently send the Grandland into the second generation (and it was about time).

Although, it is much more important to emphasize that Grandland has become a full member of the club of cars that are exclusively offered as hybrids, plug-in hybrids or in a fully electric version.

Did Experimet succeed?

The Opel Experimental concept model is often mentioned as an inspiration for the design of the Grandland. The illuminated Opel “Compass” at the front and the illuminated Opel name at the back were taken from this concept. It is about a new standard for cars, which Opel is introducing us to in the next 125 years of its existence.

There is also an intelli-Lux HD light group with a total of 51,200 pixel elements, 25,600 in each headlight. These headlights cover the area in front of the car noticeably better. At a speed of 80 per hour, objects in front of the vehicle are detected up to 40 meters earlier than is possible with halogen headlights. This gives you between one and two seconds more time to react and avoid a collision.

Speaking of pixels, the glass behind which there is a space for inductive charging of the phone is also bright. The solution called “Pixel Box” allows the phone to be visible all the time, instead of being hidden in some dark partition. This is so you don’t forget it in the car.

As for the self-darkening doors (at the request of the passengers) from the Opel Experimental, you can forget about that.

20 millimeters of luxury

As noted in the new design language of Opel, there is no longer the term chrome body parts. The new Grandlad is 4.65m long, 1.93m wide and 1.66m high.

In other words, compared to the first generation, it is longer by 173 mm, 36 mm higher and 49 mm wider. A wheelbase of 2795 mm allows passengers in the rear seats 20 mm more legroom.

The trunk capacity is a solid 550 liters, 36 more than before, and by folding down the seats, it increases to a figure of 1645 liters.

Hybridization

The STLA Medium platform conditions the power units. The offer opens with a hybrid model. The basis of the drive consists of a 1.2-liter turbo gasoline and a 21 hp electric motor, which give a hybrid total of 136 hp in a 48-volt system. At low speeds in the city, this frugal configuration makes it possible to travel up to 1 km on purely electric drive.

In the combined mode, electric driving in the city takes place almost 50% of the time. Acceleration to 100 per hour is 10.2 seconds. Consumption is around 5.5 liters per 100 km.

The plug-in hybrid with 195 hp, 350 Nm of torque and a seven-speed automatic transmission accelerates to 100 km/h in 7.8 seconds. maximum speed is 220 km/h. In the city, the range of electricity is 87 km. In the combined driving mode, consumption amounts to 0.8 to 9.9 l/100 km. When the battery is discharged, consumption ranges between 6.7 and 7.0 l/100 km.

The new Opel Grandland is characterized by noiselessness and perfect insulation of the cabin.

Promising electrification

The STLA Medium platform accommodates a battery whose height exceeds 245 mm in the floor. The electric motor develops 213 hp and 345 Nm of direct reverse torque.

Acceleration to 100 km/h is 9 seconds and the maximum speed is 170 km/h. Quite enough to leave an exceptional impression on me in the first drive. Measured, quiet, excellently insulated and comfortable above all.

The 72 kWh battery provides a driving autonomy of 523 km and it proudly says Made in EU instead of the previous Made in PRC

The offer also includes a battery with a capacity of 82 kWh, which increases the range to 582 km. A model with a 97 kWh battery is being prepared, which will provide a driving autonomy of 700 km.

Grandland enables the DC option charging power 160 kw. On fast chargers, it takes less than 30 minutes for 80% battery capacity.

Clean ride

A 10-inch or 16-inch central display can be selectively informative. In the so-called “Pure” mode on all screens, including the Head Up display, the amount of information is reduced to the most basic. Fewer distractions – more driving pleasure.

“Greenoavation” or Green Innovation, is a fancy name for an ecological approach where all interior elements, including Alcantara linings, are made of materials with a certain percentage of recycled raw materials.

Cena

Grandland is produced at the Eisenach plant in the former East Germany. To start the production of the second generation Grandland, Opel invested 130 million Euros, employed 422 robots, some AI and an unnamed number of people.

The starting price for the hybrid model in Germany is 36,400 Euros. 40,150 euros should be set aside for the plug-in hybrid, and the price for electric models starts at 46,750 euros.
